Brownbagger - Tribe Encroachments

Tuesday, June 6, 2023 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

Jason Brown is the Manager for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Recreation Management Program.  A graduate of Washington State University, he has worked for the Tribe since 2001.  Jason started with the Tribe’s Fisheries and Wildlife Program and assumed management of Recreation Management in 2004.

The Recreation Management Program oversees a broad number of projects and tasks for the Tribe.  The Program is responsible for the management of the Covenant of Mary Immaculate Park in DeSmet, ID and the Old-Man Whatkins Daniels Trail that links the communities of DeSmet and Tensed; our staff of three also maintain six playground/parks spread across several Reservation communities; and the 40-acre Camp Larson property, located in Cottonwood Bay on Coeur d’Alene Lake, purchased in 2004, provides exclusive day use recreational opportunities and access to the Lake for Tribal membership.

One of the Tribe’s recreation gems, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, is owned and managed by the Tribe from Plummer to Harrison, ID with co-ownership and management through Heyburn Park.  The Trail is a superfund action and barrier to contamination that resulted from lawsuits with mining companies in the Silver Valley.  The Trail welcomes 10’s of thousands of visitors from all over the Country and world each year.

Our discussion will focus on the Program’s management of nearly 100 miles of shoreline within the Tribe’s current Reservation Boundary and the almost 600 encroachments the Tribe manages.  Encroachments that exist on Tribal waters range from private aids to navigation, single family docks, floathomes, and a commercial marina.

Program staff are excited to meet with interested parties, in order to further discuss the policies of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe in regards to the use of the Tribe’s submerged lands and waters and its goals and efforts to protect the Tribe’s exclusive interests in Coeur d’Alene Lake and St. Joe River while striking a balance between private encroachments, public enjoyment and the well-being of the lakes, rivers, and resources.
